Autumn Workshops

| Posted in

This Autumn Art Walk Projects is pleased to present a programme of one-day workshops that run parallel to our public offering. Led by frequent Art Walk collaborators Annie Lord and Zoe Hamill, these intimate experiences will be masterclasses in using artistic techniques to explore local coastal ecologies hosted at the Art Walk Project Space in the old Portobello Police Station.

Saturday 10 October, 10.30am-4pm
Drawing Seaweed: A Celebration of Portobello’s Coast with Annie Lord

Join artist Annie Lord for a mixed media drawing workshop exploring seaweed. This is a chance to explore Edinburgh’s coast, beginning with a session of outdoor sketching on Portobello Beach before moving inside for some focused drawing. In this workshop you will learn the close observational techniques of botanical illustration as well as expressive drawing techniques, shining a light on the exquisite structures and colours of seaweed. Experiment with inky washes, creative mark-making and layered imagery to capture the fluidity and transparency of seaweed.

Saturday 17 October, 10.30-4pm
Ecological Approaches to Cameraless Photography with Zoe Hamill

Join photographer Zoe Hamill for a generative day of experimental photographic image-making – all without a camera. Using the local ecology of Portobello as a basis for exploration, this workshop will explore the many ways that plants found on our doorstep can act as agents in the creation of photographic imagery. Beginning with a walk along Seafield Prom to identify and collect plant material,  you will learn experimental analogue techniques such as phytograms, watergrams, and making photographic prints using your phone. The workshop will also introduce you to sustainable darkroom practices, with plants being used as developing solution.

Both workshops are priced at £85, including a light plant-based lunch.

Participants who book both workshops or have an Art Walk Friends’ membership, will receive a 10% discount. A limited number of concessionary rates are also available.
