This publication came through the 5 walks, 5 trees, 5 poems project, conceived and facilitated by Jonathan Baxter as part of his ongoing Craigmillar & Communities residency with Art Walk Projects. Developed in partnership with Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust and Bridgend Farmhouse the project deepened our relationship with the natural world through encounters with 5 tree species: birch, sycamore, oak, yew and horse chestnut (within Craigmillar Castle Park).

Through a series of planting, drawing and creative writing walks and workshops, participants developed a deeper understanding of the structures and patterns that inform our relationship with trees, woodlands and the ecologies they entangle.

The publication (84-page booklet and 5 cards) is edited and introduced by Jonathan Baxter, with contributions from Helen Boden, Sandy Bennett-Haber, Sarah Gittins, Elly Kinross.

Jonathan Baxter began his residency in 2020 with a year spent walking in Craigmillar and talking with local residents. With an initial research interest in the work of the Craigmillar Festival Society (CFS), Jonathan was particularly interested in the work that Craigmillar Now were doing to catalogue the CFS archive. With this work already underway, and other projects exploring similar territory, Jonathan decided to refocus his energy on the wider ecology of Craigmillar. Specifically, the meshwork of pathways that traverse Craigmillar – human and more-than-human, present and absent, placed and displaced.

To date this enquiry has led to the following projects:

2021: Line Walk Mindful Drawing

Line Walk Mindful Drawing was a year-long engagement with Little France Park. Walkers met on the first Saturday of the month from January to December 2021 to walk the same path, there and back, for an hour in both directions. The walk included an invitation to walk in mindful silence and to pause on occasion to make a drawing. Drawings included drawing breath, taking a photograph, writing a poem, drawing in a sketch book, and responsive movement. The aim of the walk was to deepen our engagement with Little Park France and to observe the changing seasons within our own lives.

Outcomes of the project were exhibited at the 2021 and 2022 Art Walk Porty Festival and an illustrative bookwork and 12-postcard set was also published. James Spence, a regular walker, also published a collection of haiku poetry responding to the walk.

2022 (ongoing): Wee Forest

Working in collaboration with Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust (ELGT), Jonathan has been actively involved in planting and maintaining a Wee Forest in Peacocktail Close.

Wee Forests are part of the global family of ‘Miyawaki Forests’ or ‘Tiny Forests’ found all over the world. They’re small, tennis court-sized woodlands that help mitigate the effects of climate change, support urban wildlife and reconnect people with nature.

Jonathan’s involvement has included community engagement to develop the site, planting the trees with local residents, follow-up maintenance and care activity, primary school engagement through citizen science (led by ELGT), and building benches to support outdoor learning (in collaboration with Action for Children, Bridgend Farmhouse and ELGT).

2022: Walking in the Footsteps of Time

Walking in the Footsteps of Time is the overall title for a more dispersed field of activity including community walks, photographic documentation, engagement with the Craigmillar Arts, Culture and Heritage Trail (CACHT), and local litter picks.

Outcomes have included a day-long walking programme for the 2022 Craigmillar and Niddrie Community Festival. The programme was inspired by CFS and asked people to consider three questions: Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going? It included a community parade, a foraging walk, a deep time walk, and a woodland installation. Collaborators included Bridgend Farmhouse, ELGT, Alistair McGowan (geologist, palaeontologist and natural historian), and artists from Mutual Studios, Craigmillar.

Jonathan also maintains an ongoing dialogue with City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) focused on the maintenance and care of three local ‘monuments’ originally included in CACHT: Niddrie Standing Stone, Gulliver Play Sculpture (now reduced to a single ‘foot’) and A Monument to an Unknown Baby (also known as Baby Craig Millar Memorial).

For more information about the day-long walking programme see here. For updates about Jonathan’s engagement with CEC watch this space.

Key community collaborators have included Miranda Baird, Michael Inman, Stuart Keiller, and Laura McNamee.

2023-24: Braid Walk

Developing ideas explored in Line Walk Mindful Drawing (LWMD), and working in collaboration with some of the LWMD participants – specifically, Helen Boden (writing) Sarah Gittins (drawing) and James Spence (haiku poetry) –Braid Walk was an invitation to walk from mouth to source along three adjoining burns: Figgate, Braid and Bonaly. The walk took its inspiration from a Taoist understanding of the Watercourse Way (or Tao) and explored braiding as a metaphor for how to bring multiple ways of knowing together in a respectful manner. The walk asked participants to consider how walking a watercourse might inform their engagement with the climate and ecological crisis.

Outcomes of the project were shared at the 2023 Art Walk Porty Festival and the project was featured in Art Walk Projects’ Art Walk Journal Issue 2, Autumn 2024. A final Braid Walk publication is currently underway.

5 walks, 5 trees, 5 poems sees Jonathan returning to the woodlands of Craigmillar Castle Park for five autumnal walks. Participants are invited to learn more about the ecology of woodlands and the ethics they engender. Periods of mindful silence, drawing and poetry will punctuate the walks.

As with previous AWP projects, a final publication will document the process and include selected drawings and poetry by the participants.

This project builds on earlier collaborations with Bridgend Farmhouse, ELGT and includes drawing workshops with Sarah Gittins.

Scotland is home to >1500 species of lichen, more than 85% of the total species found in the UK, and is recognized for its clean air quality and abundance of lichens. Despite this prevalence, lichens are far less likely to be identified and surveyed by members of the public and citizen science initiatives than vascular plants. The interactive guide and walks seek to increase awareness around lichen biology and ecology, uncovering the environmental importance of lichen species.

A series of mycelial workshops and walks led by Myceliart Collective that brought together artists, foragers, gardeners and mycologists to map our social, political, and personal connections with fungi in Edinburgh.

Mycography refers to creative processes of documenting fungi. This may encompass techniques such as drawing, recording, or other imaginative methods of rich description.

Participants were able to get involved in beginner mushroom identification, illustration, crafts and cultivation. The walks & workshops contributed to a collectively shaped chronicle of contemporary connections with local fungi.

Series co-curated by artist Johanna Koen & researcher Oona Dooley from Myceliart. Featuring facilitation by Sally Somerville-Woodiwis and Ruby Scott-Geddes, as well as workshops led by Edinburgh’s community mushroom farm and education project Rhyze Mushrooms.

An Introduction to Foraging for Medicinal Fungi (Nov 2023 to Sept 2024)

A series of walks were held exploring the rich variety of fungi present across a number of outskirt green space areas of Edinburgh, led by Myceliart organiser Johanna Koen and Rhyze Mushrooms.

Held across areas of Craigmillar, Craigentinny, Duddingston and Newhailes the walking workshops delved into the world of local medicinal fungi. A creative exploration developed covering the fascinating history of ethnomycology, a field of study that explores the relationship between fungi and humans. This involved recording medicinal fungi uses, with Rhyze Mushrooms demonstrating guerrilla mushroom cultivation of frequently-used medicinal species.

A number of the walks are detailed below.

This series of mycelial walks and workshops was commissioned by Art Walk Projects and forms part of our continuing Climate Cafe ‘In Hand with the Land’ series supported by Postcode Lottery and Awards for All.

The series culminated in an exhibition at the 2024 Art Walk Porty ‘UnderCurrent’ Festival including the production of e-zine produced by the participants.

Join us on a walk to chronicle your winter fungi sightings. This is an opportunity to engage in radical mycography, the creative documentation of our mushroom encounters, as well as a chance to share our foraging experiences in and around Edinburgh.

Inspired by both medieval pilgrimages and the radical mycology movement, this foraging walk sets out to question themes of self-transformation, linear progression, and predetermined destinations as we document our shared journey.

We will provide pens and paper. However, you can bring your preferred writing and drawing materials if you so desire.

All notes and drawings will contribute to a co-created record of our experiences, thoughts, sightings and feelings regarding fungi. Upon completion of the pilgrimage, a medieval souvenir awaits you.

Our recording of last week’s live event is ready to view from here

Journey Lines brought together discussion around path making and place making, to consider tourism and access along our coast lines. Discussing how we consider the role of tourism in making (or breaking) places, Zeiske gave an illustrated talk about her long-distance 700 mile walk Slow Coast 500 commissioned by Art Walk Projects.

In conversation with anthropologist Tim Ingold, we heard about his ideas of the Coastline, discussing socio-ecological approaches to anthropology, drawing connections with walking, weaving, and storytelling, to consider the impacts on the environment and community for path and place-making.

Chaired by Ben Twist (Director, Creative Carbon Scotland), the event also bring together representatives from different coastal path locations on the North Sea coast, as well as tourism and place making strategies.

CLAUDIA ZEISKE’S Slow Coast 500 is a long-distance walk from Dunnet Head to Berwick-upon-Tweed along the entire coast of the North Sea in Scotland. The project borrows its name from the North Coast 500 route designed to attract tourists to drive around northern Scotland. Slow Cost 500 considers the role of tourism in making (or breaking) places. Often intended as a boost to local economies, tourism can contribute to problems for local communities and their environment.

Throughout the walk, Zeiske uses existing routes and explores new ones. Along the way, she carries an orange tablecloth the colour of an OS ‘Explorer’ map, using it as a picnic blanket to encourage conversation. Step by step and stitch by stitch, Zeiske is embroidering it along the long way to the Scottish-English border, questioning the role and impacts of tourism today. Zeiske is also sending a daily postcard home to Art Walk Projects in Portobello.

As part of the 2023 Art Walk Porty Festival visitors met Claudia at Cramond Causeway joining her for the final stretch of the walk to Portobello, followed by a discussion at the Art Walk Hub to view her exhibition.

Claudia also led a workshop based on the orange tablecloth that she has carried throughout her coastal walk from Thurso and embroidered daily. Participants were given a piece of orange cloth on which to embroider a path of importance to them.

Claudia Zeiske is a walking curator, whose interest lies in path-making as a cultural practice. With friendship at heart, her walks combine a desire for a slower pace of life with socio-politically and environmentally sensitive issues. For more than a decade, her walking art projects have varied from short to long, in her vicinity or further afield, connecting places, communities and people along the way. Her walking prose promotes thinking aloud.

Projects include: Walking Lunches (2010-ongoing a play on corporate working lunches; Home to Home (2017), a Brexit-stimulated 1,800-mile walk from the artist’s home in Huntly, Aberdeenshire to her childhood home in Bavaria, Germany; Slow Marathons (2012-ongoing), annual themed group walks, questioning the competitive nature of marathons; and From Mountain to Sea (2022), a 150-mile walk across Aberdeenshire to mark the Covid period.

Journey Lines brought together discussion around path making and place making, to consider tourism and access along our coast lines. Discussing how we consider the role of tourism in making (or breaking) places, Zeiske gave an illustrated talk about her long-distance 700 mile walk Slow Coast 500.

In conversation with anthropologist Tim Ingold, we heard about his ideas of the Coastline, discussing socio-ecological approaches to anthropology, drawing connections with walking, weaving, and storytelling, to consider the impacts on the environment and community for path and place-making.

Chaired by Ben Twist (Director, Creative Carbon Scotland), the event also brought together representatives from different coastal path locations on the North Sea coast, as well as tourism and place making strategies.

Walking from mouth to source along three adjoining burns: Figgate, Braid and Bonaly, these walks took their inspiration from the way of water – its flow and healing powers – and the poetry to be found in the name Braid Burn:

Burn (landform):

Large stream or small river

Braid (transitive verb):

To make from braids
To form (three or more strands) into a braid
To mix and intermingle; to braid fact with fiction

Burn (intransitive verb):

To contain a fire
To produce or undergo discomfort or pain
To yearn ardently; burning to tell the storyThe story we’ll be telling, or rather, the story we’ll be walking, concerns our collective sense of what it means to live within a climate and ecological crisis, and how walking a watercourse might enable us to live that question now with rejuvenated purpose and joy.

Questions we asked included the following: in a time of climate and ecological crisis what qualities, human and more-than-human, might we braid to ensure our planetary survival? What can we learn from walking this particular watercourse? Why walk from mouth to source: upstream and in search of something we may never find?

Over the course of four walks and two additional workshops we explored these questions, and more, through walking, drawing, poetry, and conversation. Integral to the project was the process of walking upstream into mystery, uncertainty and doubt; qualities we may need to cultivate if we wish to respond creatively to the climate and ecological crisis and the alternative futures it gives rise to. Participants were encouraged to bring their own resources to our collective endeavour: a singer brings their voice, a photographer their camera, an ecologist their know-how.

The walks were guided by our encounter with water, curated by Jonathan Baxter (artist-curator), with contributions from Helen Boden (writer and workshop leader), Sarah Gittins (visual artist and workshop leader), and James Spence (haiku poet).

During Art Walk Porty 2023 Vessel programme participants contributed through two exhibitions (Art Walk Hub and Porty Light Box) together with poetry and conversation inspired by walking the Braid Burn Watercourse, with readings by Helen Boden, James Spence, and other walkers. Themes explored subjects of climate change, ecology, flow, structure and hope.

Since 2009 Jonathan has combined the roles of artist, curator and peer-educator to deliver a series of participatory art projects and peer-learning programmes. Current projects include his Craigmillar and Communities Walking Residency (2021-ongoing) with Art Walk Projects and an embedded artist residency at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh (2020-ongoing).

Contribution to the walk: For the Braid Walk project, I’m primarily interested in two things: What the walking of this watercourse can teach us about the climate and ecological crisis. What happens when strangers, acquaintances and friends choose to spend creative time together in places of intrinsic ecological value. I’ll be curating the walk and providing questions to walk with. I’ll also be introducing some mindfulness practices to deepen our experience en route.

Helen Boden is a poet and educator who has lived by the upper Braid Burn since 2010. Her first collection A Landscape To Figure In, a book about place and identity, was published by Red Squirrel Press in 2021. She also makes poetry in non-print formats for exhibitions and performance. As an independent Literature professional, she specialises in devising and delivering socially-engaged creative activities across a broad range of cultural, community and environmental settings, with particular interests in Writing for Wellbeing, ekphrastic poetry, and poetry walks.

Contribution to the walk: I’m interested in exploring various braidings of language, sound, place and placename: the flows of water and of words; states of flood and drought as metaphors; the significance of bridges and gates. I’ll be facilitating writing exercises based on embodied, sensory experience of Braid Burn; and introducing some existing poetic texts about watercourses for both reflection and stimulus to new writing. I’m thrilled to be deepening my engagement with this burn and its environs, and look forward to discovering the words, ideas and experiences all the other walkers bring.

Sarah Gittins is a visual artist and educator, working across a variety of media, with a particular focus on drawing, painting and printmaking. Her work explores issues of social and ecological justice and pays close attention to the wonders of the living world. Sarah is interested in the capacity of image making to enable engagement, conversation and action for change. Alongside making and exhibiting work, Sarah has facilitated creative workshops and taught drawing, painting and printmaking in a wide range of community and educational settings over the course of two decades.

Contribution to the walk: I’m looking forward to exploring different layers of experience on the walk through onsite and reflective drawing and mark making. I will be facilitating drawing exercises that aim to bring our experiences of the Braid Burn’s varied environment into the visual realm. How does it feel to step into the burn? What marks can describe the movement of the water, the feel of the stones? What colours can be found and ground from the pebbles that wash up on the banks of the burn? How can drawing be used to pay attention to the welcome and unwelcome finds of an urban watercourse?

James Spence is a writer and a storyteller. His collection Scottish Borders Folk Tales was published by The History Press in 2015. He is currently putting the finishing touches to his book Ferr Frae the Dirlin Thrang – a Scots version of Thomas Hardy’s great classic. He has written four collections of haiku in recent years. His most recent collection A Walk in the Park, reflects on 12 monthly art walks through Little France Park, Edinburgh, curated by Jonathan Baxter. The book was part-funded, launched and exhibited at Art Walk Porty last year. James relishes leading creative workshops in poetry and storytelling, where he looks to inspire people though their own passions and stories.

Contribution to the walk: I see haiku writing as a means of producing snapshots of what I observe. In doing so I find that it greatly deepens my experience of the natural environment. I’m looking forward to taking part in the Braid Walk project, where I’ll both share related haiku and produce new haiku en route. For those who wish it, I’ll also be on hand to assist folk with their own haiku or verse, either individually or within a workshop. We have a deep connection with natural water courses. Folk down the ages have relied on them for their survival. I’m really inspired by burns and rivers; the sound of them, their light, their reflections, their depths and their journeys. I listen out for their little messages of haiku.

During LUCAS PRIEST’S residency with Art Walk Projects’ ‘Climate Cafe’ the School will become an expanded walking forum featuring contributions from artists Iman Tajik and Johanna Koen. Drawing from the writings and research of Elena Biserna we will collectively meander through coastal sites of change and dereliction, exploring walking scores as tools for awareness in both a literal and politicized sense.

Through walking routes, discussions and psychogeographic games, we have been investigating the sociocultural, ecological and economic implications of water systems in Edinburgh’s coastal cityscape. Our research has no empirical results; only the passing conversations held between participants, and the experiences gained by actually doing the scores.

The School of Pedestrian Culture is a pseudo-institution for the ‘play testing’ of psychogeographic games aimed at disorienting how we encounter space and place across Scotland’s central belt. The School has a particular focus on exploring, encountering and drifting through sites of change, community resilience and capitalist expansion.

The School emerged from the sense of a lack of a collective pedagogy at the Edinburgh College of Art following the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally existing as the ‘Diversionists’, the group later became known as the School of Pedestrian Culture, a fictional department at ECA. Now part walking forum, part art collective, part art school, the SoPC interweaves walking and talking with local politics, community resilience, friendships and art!

This project forms the first part of Art Walk Projects’ newly formed ‘Climate Cafe’; a series of walking events that provide informal, inclusive spaces for everyone to join in conversation and get involved, that connect with climate action locally and further afield.

Supported by funding from The National Lottery Awards for All & Creative Scotland, the ‘Climate Cafe’ will involve a series of events working with artists and ecologists from May-Dec 2023

During winter through to summer 2021-22, artists Elise Ashby and Stephanie Whitelaw designed and delivered a series of monthly art walks, exploring peripheral sites on the edge of Portobello. The project explored the ecology of place and the potential of growth within unmanaged sites, cultivating a collective approach to caring for damaged spaces within cities.

A culminating exhibition in 2022 pulled together the various participant responsive drawings and writings, presenting a visual mapping of six months of walking together. Further drawing on the ecology and impermanence of place, the artists designed a series of indoor and outdoor works that explored the passing of time and materiality of a landscape. A guided walk through the sites was led by Elise and Stephanie during August 2022, reading texts and discussing unfolding themes.

Elise Ashby is interested in the fundamentals of drawing – the interaction of materials leaving traces of activity and how this echoes the material relationship between our sensory bodies and our environment; She is interested in how drawing can explore the moral questions we encounter on the basis of existing materially now and historically.

Stephanie Whitelaw cultivates through her art practice personal engagements with local landscapes, both physical and digital, encouraging a deeper sense of understanding.
Artist/curator Rosy Naylor invited five artists to come together and share dialogue around their walking habitats at a time when there were geographical limits upon the distances one could walk. Together a project slowly emerged with consideration and care around each of the five habitats and their commonality.

Each artist collected the same amount of water from their local sea or river which was then boiled off at Ascus Lab to create salt, with varying colours and quantities resulting; from pure white to polluted brown.

In 2022 the five artists came together for the first time, leading an in-person walk at Portobello Beach; each artist taking it in turn to pair a section of the walk with their own location. An exhibition at the Art Walk Festival Hub also showed the waters, salts and accompanying site-responsive artworks created by each artist.

Henna Asikainen is a multidisciplinary artist. She creates work that questions our complex relationship with nature and its intersections with social justice, climate justice, migration and belonging. Much of Henna’s recent work has been participatory, combining ecological and social issues, and centred on engaging people with lived experience of migration and displacement.

Louise Barrington is a multi- disciplinary artist based in Orkney using film, dance, textiles and sculpture to focus on the aesthetic and environmental aspects of the landscape experienced over the four seasons. The edge landscapes of Orkney and the in-between moments of dusk, dawn, and twilight, create a restrained colour palette, resonant with the Japanese concept of Ma.

Rosy Naylor is a social practice multi-disciplinary artist, and curator creating projects working with local communities and public spaces, which broaden the viewing experience of art. Her practice includes many voices, presenting a world view through the indigenous language of Quechua that is relational and complex.

Stephanie Whitelaw cultivates personal engagements with local landscapes, both physical and digital. Working with themes of reciprocity, she explores dialogues with nature in urban and rural contexts, through walking and site-responsive art making.
