A Wave of Reflection’. Multiple circular mixed media paintings, splashing across a wall, each with a word relating to watching the sea. They range in scale, tone and subtle colour.
Edinburgh based, award winning artist Catherine Sargeant uses text in her art, not as a writer or poet but as a collaborator: collecting, collating & then creating out of the myriad of words gathered from different sources & groups of people. For this series of works she posed the question ‘When you are watching the sea what words come to mind?’ The answers have been embedded within the individual paintings.

Her materials include a combination of matt & gloss paints, inks, graphite & pigments along with touches of iridescence, on both plywood & aluminium surfaces, some of which are reclaimed/repurposed. The use of circles points towards portholes, binoculars, microscopes & water droplets. This installation was exhibited in the SSA annual at the RSA last year. Each time it is exhibited it takes on a new shape & can be interpreted differently.
